How Many Photos Should Actually Go in a Photo Book? A Size-by-Size Breakdown

There's no single right number of photos for a photo book, and most generic advice ducks the question for exactly that reason. But "it depends" isn't actually useful on its own — so here's what it depends on, and a real starting point for each common size.

It depends on size and pacing, not personal preference

Two things determine the right count: how much physical page space you're filling, and how much story you're trying to tell per page. A book covering a single weekend trip and a book covering six months of a baby's life need very different photo counts even at the same physical size — the trip book can breathe with fewer, larger photos; the six-month book needs more images just to represent the actual span of time.

A starting point by size

• 6×6 softcover — best kept tight, around 20–40 photos. At this size, more than that starts to feel cramped page to page.
• 8×8 hardcover — the size most people land on, and it comfortably holds 40–60 photos without feeling sparse or crowded.
• 8×11 landscape hardcover — built for bigger stories. 60–100 photos works well here, especially for longer stretches of time or full-bleed photo spreads.

These are starting points, not rules — the right number for your specific book is the number where every page still earns its spot.

The more common mistake is too many, not too few

Most first-time photo book makers overshoot. It feels wasteful to leave a good photo out, so pages get crammed with five or six small images instead of two or three that actually stand out.
